Steelhead Park
Reel in some fun at Steelhead Park in Houston, BC! Scale the thrilling tunnel slide tower, explore nautical-themed play, and enjoy ground-level fun for every kid. This playground doesn’t just swim upstream — it makes a splash!
Dive Into Steelhead Park, Houston’s Newest Adventure
Drivers on Highway 16 can now spot the 14-foot tunnel slide that crowns the District of Houston’s new playground at Steelhead Park. Backed largely by grant funding, it opened in June 2026. In addition, the park offers walking trails, picnic areas, and flower gardens, plus the World’s Largest Fly Rod. At its centre, the NU-Edge X Tower rises over blue rubber surfacing. Its blue, teal, and green colour scheme also recalls the nearby Bulkley River. As a result, the design ties the play space to its community, just as a themed playground should. So, residents and highway travellers now have a brand-new reason to pull over and play!
From Toddlers to Tweens
Every Age Gets Hooked on Steelhead Park
The playground serves kids ages 2 – 12, with challenges matched to each age group. For older kids, angled climbing walls and a bridge climber lead up the tower before the tunnel slide spirals back down. Meanwhile, ground-level stepping stones and monkey bars turn every round of ‘The Floor is Lava’ into a thrilling race! Along the way, children practise balance, coordination, and upper-body strength while taking age-appropriate risks. Younger explorers, in turn, try a variety of lower-level slides and climbers sized just for them. Additionally, a ground-level spinner lets toddlers control their own ride. Because the playground serves both age groups, siblings can play side by side.

Inclusive Play Flows Through Steelhead Park
Accessibility begins with the ground itself. Firstly, the poured-in-place rubber surface, made from over 1,800 recycled car tires, gives mobility devices a stable route across the play area. Then a transfer deck and stairs lead children up into the tower. The Raft Rider rocker also sits at wheelchair transfer height, so riders of every ability can feel like they’re floating down a river! At the same time, musical blocks, a fidget panel, and a drum engage children who prefer ground-level play. Ultimately, inclusive playground design lets families of every age and ability share the same space at Steelhead Park.
