Home Is Where the Play Is at MacLean Park

Where can kids in a busy Vancouver neighbourhood find a place to call their own? At MacLean Park, a subsidized housing development managed by BC Housing, the answer is a quiet courtyard framed by tall trees and bike paths. At its centre, a Kids’ Choice play structure from Miracle Recreation welcomes children ages 2 – 12. Kids climb, cross monkey bars, and zip down the slide. Along the way, sensory panels invite them to touch and listen, while age-appropriate challenges let children of different abilities take part. Meanwhile, nearby park benches give caregivers a comfortable place to watch. As a result, residents have a dedicated space to play, explore, and make friends right where they live!

Two Age Groups, One Structure

Raising the Bar for Big Kids and Little Climbers

Older kids ages 5 – 12 find plenty to conquer at MacLean Park. Two styles of monkey bars — an inverted ladder and triangular rungs — test their grip and upper-body strength. Swinging from rung to rung also sharpens balance and coordination, so each crossing becomes a puzzle to solve. Then a curved ladder climber carries them into the main structure. With each attempt, they build gross motor skills and the confidence to try again! Meanwhile, younger children ages 2 – 5 climb easy stairs to the tallest deck. From there, they ride the grey single-wide slide or explore two activity panels. Because the structure fits their size, little ones play on their own and feel proud of each climb.

A Way Up for Everyone

Inclusive Play Is as Easy as ABC at MacLean Park

Inclusive play begins with getting onto the structure. For this reason, a transfer station lets children who use mobility devices move from their chair onto the deck and reach the slide. In addition, ADA stairs give kids with mobility limitations another way up. Beyond physical access, sensory and learning features welcome even more players. Kids can spin the ball popper panel and send its balls tumbling, a sensory-rich mix of touch and sound. Similarly, an alphabet panel turns letters into a hands-on game that builds early literacy. Together, these features let children of different ages, abilities, and interests join in. That’s the heart of inclusive playground design, and at this courtyard, everyone gets a turn!
